M.C. Escher, Drawing Hands |
The Brigham Young University Museum of Art has hosted spectacular exhibitions in the past, including the works of Carl Bloch. Yesterday a new exhibition opened featuring the works of M.C. Escher. The new exhibition, M.C. Escher: Other Worlds, is every bit as amazing as it sounds. Escher's drawings, etchings, paintings, wood engravings, woodcuts, linoleum cuts, and lithographs are accessible online, but it is worth the visit to view the original artwork.
Maurits Cornelis Escher was an interesting character. Like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Dürer before him, Escher was left-handed. He lived in Italy for thirteen years, where he met and married Jetta Umiker. He developed a fascination with the Regular Division of the Plane after visiting the Alhambra in Spain. Even though he never claimed an expertise in mathematics, many of his works combine mathematical precision with creativity. If you have the opportunity, come explore the other worlds of M.C. Escher at the BYU Museum of Art.
